Conference summary
At lunchtime, why do we dine in Quebec, when we have lunch in France? Why do Quebecers get a kick out of doing things by hand, while their French counterparts get a kick out of doing things by hand?
Québécois French is a rich and lively language, whose development reflects the linguistic creativity of its speakers. Through a variety of playful examples, this lecture will serve as an introduction to historical linguistics, tracing the major stages in the development of Quebec French and providing some answers to the question so often asked: how can we explain the differences between Quebec French and French « from France » ?
About the speaker
Joëlle Breton has a degree in language science and a master’s in linguistics (M.A.). Since 2022, she has been working as a research professional for the Trésor de la langue française au Québec (TLFQ) , a research group affiliated with Laval University- Faculté des lettres et des sciences humaines (FLSH), whose mission is to shed historical light on the French language in use in Quebec. She recently contributed to the comic book « La langue par la bande », published in March 2024, which humorously traces the origins of 28 Quebec expressions.
This event is organized by the Renewable Materials Research Center, in collaboration with Charles Breton. Â If you have any questions about the event, please contact Besma Bouslimi (besma.bouslimi@sbf.ulaval.ca), thank you.
