Congratulations to Luc Lionel Girompaire on his distinction on the Honour Table of the Faculty of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies for 2023!

9 October 2023

Congratulations to Luc Lionel Girompaire who has been awarded the distinction of the Faculty of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies’ Honour Table for the year 2023. This is a well-deserved recognition of his efforts and academic excellence in the Master’s program in wood and bio-based materials engineering. He was unanimously awarded excellent marks for his thesis by the jury.

Luc Lionel Girompaire was working on « Modeling fire dynamics in a compartment containing exposed wood » under the supervision of Christian Dagenais.

Congratulations Luc on this remarkable achievement!

Project Summary

The use of engineered wood products (CLT, glulam, etc.) is gaining in popularity in both residential and non-residential construction. In addition to being a renewable resource, wood is a biophilic material that provides occupants with a sense of well-being. However, its use is limited by its combustibility. Exposure to wood elements can have an impact on how quickly a fire develops, as well as its severity and duration. The aim of the project is to assess and quantify this impact in order to create an analytical model evaluating the temperature and heat output during a compartment fire in a massive wood construction with varying amounts of exposed wood. This model will predict the rate of fire development, as well as the anticipated depth of charring (the rate at which wood burns when the fire is fully developed). This project should make it possible to increase the amount of exposed wood in massive wood construction buildings, thus reconciling the biophysical benefits of the material with safety aspects.
