Carbon Footprint of Hydroelectricity: A Successful Symposium

From September 22 to 24, 2025, the Kruger Pavilion hosted the Université Laval – Hydro-Québec Symposium. Over 50 participants—including researchers, students, and partners—gathered to discuss a central topic: the carbon footprint of hydroelectricity in Quebec and Canada. These three days provided a valuable opportunity for rich exchanges, in-depth discussions, and idea sharing.

The symposium was expertly organized by Professor Evelyne Thiffault, regular member and co-director of the Renewable Materials Research Centre (CRMR), along with her Team Carbone. Their dedication and commitment created an engaging environment for scientific discussions and networking. We extend our sincere thanks for their invaluable involvement.

The symposium program was diverse, featuring presentations, discussions, and exchanges on a variety of themes—from measurement methods to environmental assessment, as well as technological innovations and the political and economic challenges related to hydroelectricity.

These meetings fostered new interdisciplinary connections and opened promising avenues for research. They also encouraged collective reflection on the future of hydroelectricity in a context where the energy transition and greenhouse gas reduction are more relevant than ever.

A heartfelt thank you to all participants for your enthusiasm and active contributions: you made this symposium a stimulating, enriching, and friendly event. The team looks forward to continuing the discussions and building on the collaborations initiated.

Université Laval and Hydro-Québec continue their joint commitment to sustainable energy, guided by science and innovation. Congratulations to everyone for this remarkable success!
