Forest Owners of Canada (FOC) are proud to award the Peter deMarsh Memorial Scholarship, valued at $15,000, to young researcher Sanjoy Roy, a PhD student in Forest Sciences at Université Laval.
Congratulations to Sanjoy for this well-deserved recognition! This award highlights his dedication and the outstanding quality of his work in the field of sustainable forestry.
Under the supervision of Professor Evelyne Thiffault, from the Department of Wood and Forest Sciences and a member of the Renewable Materials Research Centre (CRMR), Sanjoy focuses his research on the boreal forest. His primary goal is to optimize carbon storage while ensuring the production of wood needed to meet Canada’s material and energy demands, contributing to a forestry economy that is both productive and environmentally responsible.
To achieve this, Sanjoy develops innovative forest modeling tools that support sustainable forest planning and management. His work aims to reconcile timber production with ecological resilience, a key challenge in the current context of rapid climate change.
Sanjoy’s research follows a climate-adaptive forestry approach, particularly applied to mixed forests in Quebec. Drawing on the recommendations of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), he develops practical and tailored strategies to strengthen the capacity of both local and international communities to respond to environmental challenges.
The Peter deMarsh Memorial Scholarship, established by FOC, honors the legacy of Peter deMarsh, a visionary leader who dedicated his life to mobilizing forest owners worldwide to collectively defend their interests through local, regional, national, and international organizations.
Bravo to Sanjoy Roy for this exceptional recognition and for his valuable contribution to sustainable forest research in Canada, inspiring and shaping the future of forests and the communities they support.
