On September 12, the Faculty of Forestry, Geography and Geomatics (FFGG) officially launched the activities of the Canada Research Chair in Climate-Adaptive Forestry, coinciding with the inauguration of the interpretive trails at the Joncas Bog. The event, held at Montmorency Forest, brought together nearly 60 participants.
Chairholder Professor Alexis Achim, who also serves as the Scientific Director of Montmorency Forest, presented his research objectives. This prestigious appointment comes with a $1.4 million grant over seven years, providing essential support for the continuation of his innovative work and projects.
In a context where forests worldwide are experiencing unprecedented disturbances due to wildfires and climate change, the Research Chair aims to transform forestry science by systematically integrating the rapid evolution of environmental conditions. The research will focus on three complementary axes: « observe », « anticipate », and « adapt ». The first aims to develop near-real-time forest monitoring tools. The second will link climate projections to forest growth and the anticipated evolution of disturbance risks. The third will focus on designing innovative forestry treatments better suited to changing climatic conditions. This research will produce data, tools, and practical solutions to enhance the resilience of Canadian forests, preserve their health, and support the communities that depend on them. It will also contribute to the training of around thirty students, with Montmorency Forest—serving as a true open-air laboratory—providing an ideal setting for these studies.
Professor Achim’s appointment reflects the excellence of his work and the significant impact of his research, supported by his team and numerous national and international partners. Congratulations to Professor Achim on this prestigious distinction, which highlights the scope and importance of his research in climate-adaptive forestry.
