Modelling Forest Growth and Yield: A Support Tool for Sustainable Forest Management

For decades, forest growth and yield modelling has contributed to the sustainable management of Quebec’s forests. Estimating forest yield using yield tables and growth models forms the basis of various forest planning processes, such as calculating forest potential and developing silvicultural strategies. Since the first yield tables, these tools have evolved to meet the needs of sustainable forest management. The growth models currently used in forest planning allow for a better representation of the diversity and complexity of forest stands. However, these models must continuously adapt to maintain their role in supporting forest management, particularly to account for environmental changes driven by global change.

Hugues Power is a forest engineer, graduated from Université Laval in 1998, and earned a PhD in Biological Sciences from the Université du Québec à Montréal in 2013. Since 2012, he has been a researcher at the Forest Research Directorate of the MRNF, specializing in forest growth and yield modelling. His work focuses on developing modelling tools to support sustainable forest management.
