The Bioenergy Innovation Day was held on November 26, 2024, under the auspices of the Energy Task Force of the CCTT Energy Network and the Quebec Smart Energy Network (RQEI). Supported by the Government of Quebec as part of the 2030 Green Economy Plan, as well as by the Innovation Catalyst for Quebec’s Energy Transition (CITEQ) and the FRQNT, this event brought together a diverse array of stakeholders committed to accelerating Quebec’s energy transition.
The day stood out for its exceptional mobilization of local and regional actors, underscoring the central role bioenergy plays in discussions about a sustainable energy future. The event’s opening set a pivotal stage for exchanges on bioenergy, featuring influential speakers such as Martin Bourbonnais (CCTT Center for Automated Production and Centre TERRE, Energy Task Force), Nassim Noura, PhD (UQTR and RQEI), Marc-Alexandre Brousseau, Mayor of Thetford Mines and Warden of the MRC des Appalaches, and Normand Mousseau (Trottier Energy Institute). These speakers provided a structured overview of the challenges and opportunities in the field, creating a clear framework to guide discussions throughout the day.
One of the highlights of the event was the first major panel, which focused on bioenergy challenges from the perspective of municipalities and Indigenous communities. Moderated by Simon Barnabé (UQTR), this panel brought together prominent figures, including Grand Chief Constant Awashish of the Atikamekw Nation and Yanick Baillargeon, elected Warden of the MRC du Domaine-du-Roy. Evelyne Thiffault, Full Professor in the Department of Wood and Forest Sciences at Université Laval, played a pivotal role in this panel. She provided an in-depth scientific perspective on the importance of bioenergy in achieving a sustainable energy transition, while highlighting the challenges of implementing bioenergy solutions in diverse contexts. Through her expertise and dedication, Évelyne not only enriched the discussions but also elevated the visibility of the CRMR and Laval University as key players in renewable energy research.
This panel, like the entire event, underscored the necessity of combining innovation, science, and collaboration to build a sustainable energy future. The Bioenergy Innovation Day once again demonstrated the power of interaction and exchange in advancing the bioenergy sector.
Congratulations, Evelyne, for this brilliant contribution and for continuing to promote bioenergy research in Quebec and beyond!
