What Does the Future Hold for Our Grandchildren in Terms of the Environment?

In this video segment, Evelyne Thiffault, professor and researcher in forestry and climate change, offers a clear-eyed yet hopeful reflection on the environmental challenges future generations will face. She discusses the major pressures already weighing on our planet: global warming, wildfires, floods, ecosystem disruption, and the adaptation of natural resources.

These phenomena, worsened by climate change, threaten biodiversity and weaken forest resilience. To address these challenges, Thiffault highlights the key role of forest ecosystem adaptation, sustainable forestry, responsible natural resource management, and the increased use of bio-based materials as levers to reduce environmental impacts.

She emphasizes the importance of science and collective action in guiding political and economic decisions. Science, she reminds us, provides answers to many of the questions raised by our environmental future—and serves as an essential guide to inform our choices. Among the concrete solutions, she advocates for the restoration of forest ecosystems and the development of bioenergy with carbon capture.

Her message is clear: we still have the power to act. Through innovation, education, and ambitious climate policies, it is possible to build a viable and resilient future. By focusing on renewable resources and rethinking our relationship with nature, we can offer our grandchildren a healthy planet, full of possibilities.
