🏗️ This review article analyzes the impacts of forest fires and insect infestations (the eastern spruce budworm and the mountain pine beetle) on wood properties and its utilization. It shows that these disturbances can reduce the mechanical and commercial quality of wood, but that part of this resource can still be recovered through appropriate processing methods (optimized sawing, engineered wood products, and bioenergy). The authors conclude that the valorization of affected wood strongly depends on the type of disturbance, the harvesting delay, and the available processing technologies.
