Congratulations to Alex Mary, whose thesis project has been nominated for the 2025 Cecobois Excellence Award!

28 January 2025

It is with great pleasure that we congratulate Alex on this new accomplishment. Although her PhD is officially completed, the impact of her work continues, bringing promising results and pleasant surprises that demonstrate the influence of her research in the field of wood engineering.

Her research project titled « Development of Bio-based Adhesives for Engineered Wood Products » has been nominated for the prestigious Cecobois Excellence Award – Centre of Expertise on Commercial Wood Construction 2025 in the  « Student Award – Research Project » category. This nomination is a reflection of the importance and innovation of her work, which actively contributes to advancing sustainable technologies and practices in the wood sector.

In an effort to make her work more accessible and understandable, Alex also invites us to explore a simplified comic book she created. This playful initiative allows us to delve into her research world in an informative and entertaining way, showcasing Alex’s ability to make science more engaging and accessible to a broad audience.

On the technical side, Alex used polyurethane adhesives in CLT panels, ranging from C0 to C80, indicating a gradual replacement of petrochemical polyol with milk proteins, from 0% to 80%. This approach marks an important step towards integrating bio-based materials into wood products. More specifically, the C70 adhesive, which showed the best resistance to delamination, is recognized as a bio-based adhesive under the BioPreferred® program of the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA). This development opens new perspectives for producing more sustainable and environmentally friendly wood products.

Once again, congratulations to Alex for this outstanding achievement and the impact of her work in the field of wood engineering!
