Congratulations to Mariel Alejandra Zevallos Luna, Véronic Landry, and Damase P. Khasa on the publication of their article, « Alginate–calcium encapsulation of root-associated fungi: Viability, storage stability and functional recovery,» in Archives of Microbiology!

This study evaluates calcium–alginate bead encapsulation as a method for preserving two root-associated fungi, Hebeloma crustuliniforme and Phialocephala fortinii. The results show that storage at 4 °C maintains fungal viability for 30 days, whereas storage at 25 °C leads to a progressive decline in viable propagules. Following storage, both fungi rapidly recover their growth capacity. These findings highlight a promising approach for the preservation and delivery of fungal inocula for forestry and ecological restoration.
