👏 Congratulations to João Paulo C. de Liz, Nelson Thiffault, Nicholas C. Coops, Alexandre Morin-Bernard, and Alexis Achim on the publication of their article « Fine-scale drivers of sugar maple (Acer saccharum) habitat suitability at its northern range limit», in Forestry: An International Journal of Forest Research!
🌲 This study shows that climate change could favor the northward expansion of sugar maple (Acer saccharum) in the near term. Using a high-resolution model based on 3,664 forest plots, the authors identified four main factors determining habitat suitability: soil moisture related to topography, soil fertility, winter temperatures, and wind exposure. By 2040, suitable habitats could increase by 16%, compared with only 3% in losses. These findings provide forest managers with valuable information to identify priority sites and guide adaptation strategies, including assisted migration of the species.
