Congratulations to Alexis Achim on receiving major funding of $300,000 from the Ministry of Natural Resources and Forests!

13 May 2025

Congratulations to Alexis Achim, professor at Faculty of Forestry, Geography and Geomatics (FFGG) and scientific director of the Montmorency Forest, who has secured financial support from the Government of Quebec for his innovative project entitled « Development and Implementation of Dynamic Forest Inventories in Quebec ».

This ambitious project aims to address the challenges posed by climate change by developing dynamic forest inventories (DFIs) capable of monitoring, in near real time, the evolution of Quebec’s forest ecosystems. By combining LiDAR data with existing forest inventories, the team will produce high-quality Enhanced Forest Inventories (EFIs), offering a detailed and refined representation of forest composition.

The DFIs will be deployed and tested in three representative forests across Quebec, including the Montmorency Forest. Carried out in partnership with the Forest Research Directorate and Domtar, this project is supported by $300,000 in funding from the Ministry of Natural Resources and Forests (Ministère des Ressources naturelles et des Forêts). By enabling high-resolution, near real-time monitoring of biomass, volume, and species composition, the DFIs will provide in-depth insights into the impacts of climate change on the growth, productivity, and resilience of Quebec’s forests.

This funding is part of the Ministry’s broader efforts to modernize forest management and support applied forestry research in the context of climate transition.

Holder of a Tier 1 Canada Research Chair (NSERC) in Silviculture Adapted to Climate Change, Alexis Achim is a leading figure in forest innovation in Quebec. A dedicated professor and influential researcher, he is a regular member of the Renewable Materials Research Centre (CRMR), which he led from 2017 to 2022, as well as a member of the Ordre des ingénieurs forestiers du Québec and the Centre for Forest Research. He has spearheaded several major initiatives, including Silva21, a prominent pan-Canadian project focused on adapting silvicultural practices to global change. He also played a key role in establishing a remote sensing laboratory dedicated to adapting silviculture to climate-related challenges, further strengthening his contribution to the development of sustainable solutions for the forests of tomorrow.

Thanks to his leadership and applied research, Professor Alexis Achim plays a leading role in developing concrete solutions to strengthen forest resilience in the face of climate change and to promote the use of materials derived from renewable resources. Congratulations to Professor Achim on this well-deserved recognition and for his unwavering commitment to advancing sustainable, innovative, and future-oriented forest research!

We would also like to extend our congratulations Professors Shuva Hari Gautam and Olivier Villemaire-Côté, who have also received significant funding to support their research on sustainable forest management. Read more!
