Congratulations to Kalvin Durand, a PhD student in wood and bio-based materials engineering under the supervision of Tatjana Stevanovic and the co-supervision of Denis Rodrigue, who has been selected as a finalist in the 15th edition of the “la preuve par l’image” competition organized by Acfas!
The 20 images selected for the competition arouse curiosity, wonder and fascination about science!
Kalvin Durand‘s photo entitled « Épluchette de riz », was taken using a scanning electron microscope. It shows the rice husk, which protects the grain like a nutshell from external aggressors such as insects, bacteria, and fungi. Inedible, this husk is shelled by the agri-food industry to extract the rice grain before being eliminated. Made up of lignin, cellulose, and hemicellulose, the husk is covered with a thin layer of silica, forming a mosaic of small mounds visible in the image. Extracting these compounds could help to recycle this agricultural residue into biofuel or biopolymers.
Thanks to Kalvin for brilliantly representing the Renewable Materials Research Center in this competition!
