Forest biomass for renewable natural gas production in Quebec

Summary: This webinar reviews the challenges of forest biomass for renewable natural gas (RNG) production in Quebec. As a trustee of vast forest resources, Quebec could be called upon to play a significant role in mobilizing forest biomass for the production of bioenergy in solid, liquid, and gaseous forms. Recent technological advances suggest that forest biomass could be used to produce renewable natural gas (RNG), which could then be transported and used in the same way as its fossil equivalent. However, sourcing forest biomass for bioenergy production, including RNG, raises questions about forest ecosystems’ health after harvesting. What’s more, accounting for life-cycle carbon emissions from bioenergy is subject to considerable uncertainty. Research results from Quebec will be presented to shed light on these issues and assess the role of RNG from forest biomass in the energy transition and the fight against climate change.

Evelyne Thiffault is a forest engineer and full professor in the Department of Wood and Forest Sciences, and Scientific Director of Forêt Montmorency, Laval University’s teaching and research forest. Her work focuses on the role of forestry in the energy transition and the fight against climate change.
